John le Carre There are times when getting all evidence available is not possible. Sometimes leaders must follow their own instincts with little or no guidance from others as to the proper course. Sometime leaders can act autonomously and independently. Other times they dare not act autonomously or independently. No matter how good the leader, the bottom line is that you do depend on the results of others and they way they take responsibility. The greatest pleasure in life is doing what people say can’t be done. Leadership means that there will always be problems which will present themselves for solution. Not all the problems you deal with are yours. Many of them are just modern manifestations of old, intractable, unresolved problems from the past. Some you will fix; others you won’t; others will fix you. Leading by numbers is simply a symptom of short-term thinking. Jumping over people is one way to succeed. But over-ambitious managers just walk over them. There are times when your mind will be saying “no” and your guts will be saying “yes.” By looking through others’ eyes we can see better through our own. Discoveries are often made by not following instructions, by going of the main road, by trying the untried.
